Nix family vacation 2011- Smith River, California

Nix family vacation - Smith River, California 2011
For the last four years, the Nixes have taken us on one amazing vacation after another. We have been to Whitefish in Montana, Destin in Florida, Stowe in Vermont and now the Smith River in California. Each have been special, unique and equally as fabulous. I have to say that the Nixes have a special knack for picking beautiful locations with lots to do! We are lucky because we enjoy each other's company and we look forward to this trip every year. Despite the minor meltdown or two along the way from both children and adults alike, we have a really good time together. We make special memories that the girls, Daren and I will hold dear forever. We love spending time together. The girls idolize their LaLa. They love playing with their Mimi and Papa. Mommy and Daddy get to enjoy watching the girls experience these amazing new things. We all enjoy a breath of fresh air and a break from the monotony and stress of everyday life. Thank you to Johnny and Becky (aka Mimi and Papa) for providing such wonderful memories for all of us that are sure to last a lifetime!

This year, our family headed to Smith River, California just seconds from the Oregon border. We had the ocean in our backyard and the mountains in our frontyard. If we ventured off a bit, we were in "the forest," as Claire says, otherwise known as the Redwoods.

This is our one and only family picture (can you believe that?) and we took it on the drive to our house after a long day and night traveling. Our flight was cancelled so we drove from San Francisco to Crescent City. We spent the night in a drive-up motel with a motorcade hanging out with us in a town called Fortuna. Fortunately, we left that town quickly. The drive was actually really nice. It was so beautiful and we got to see the northern California countryside.
Our little family on the drive to our home in Smith River
Like father, like son.
These are some of my personal favorite beach moments...
The girls holding hands
LaLa and Claire playing by the beach
Papa, Mimi and the girls
Mommy, Claire and Harper playing in the water
The girls on the beach
Harper in the Redwoods at the Avenue of the Giants cracked me up! As usual, she was afraid of nothing and in the middle of everything! She's such a trooper.
Harper all smiles in the clover
Claire spent much of her Redwoods ventures on LaLa's shoulders, on Mommy's shoulders, on Daddy's shoulders... She loved it!
The fam in the heart of the Redwoods
D standing in front the the Boy Scout Tree which is over 30 feet in diameter. HUGE!
We went to the Wild Life Refuge. I loved watching Claire love on this brand new baby opossum. She was so gentle and almost fearful of holding it because it was so little.
Harper loved hugging the goats, elk, deer, etc.
We all got to pet baby tigers. It was pretty neat, but they were actually pretty strong and a bit scary.
Gotta love Mr. Sea Lion winking at us
The Nixes and LaLa took the girls on a boat ride down the river while Daren and I hiked a 6 mile trail to see one of the largest Redwoods in the forest. I love this picture of the girls getting ready to get on the boat with the Nixes.
These are some of my favorite scenery shots. Northern California = Thumbs up!

Harper "Ah Loo"

If we ever want a chance to record, in pictures or videos, our sweet Harper girl then we better get it while she's moving around. Over the past few months, Harper says I love you. She says "Ah Loo." Sometimes, it sounds like "Ah Luh Loo" but she says it. She will run up to us, say it and run off. We can ask her to say it and she will. I have been trying to get it on video for quite some time now and I was finally successful! It is definitely something I want to always be able to hear and remember. It melts me every time. The cool thing about this video clip is that she says it both ways "Ah Luh Loo" and "Ah Loo." Please disregard our mess of toys and breakfast in the background. It is our life with two busy girls.

Rock N Roll, San Diego

At the top of Catherine and my bucket list was to complete a half marathon together. We have talked over the years about doing one together. We decided this race was the one. It was a beautiful race- flat, 70 degree sunshine with a light breeze, crowds of people and live music at every mile stop. San Diego is a slice of heaven and this is definitely the perfect place for this sort of venue. I began my training vigorously and was doing really well. In fact, I was ahead of schedule. Unfortunately with the nature of my life working full time and not wanting to sacrifice a single moment of time with the kids while they are awake, I was doing my training at night on the treadmill. BORING! As soon as I hit about 5-6 miles, I hit a wall. I just couldn't push myself, but I went to San Diego to complete this with my baby sister. We said we were going to do this together and I was determined.

My two favorites signs along the marathon course were "You obviously have great endurance. Call me." That made Cat and I laugh hysterically. Another of our favorites was at mile 10 when my feet were on fire, my hips were tight, my knee was swollen and I just wanted to see the finish line. There was this crusty old man standing on the side of the road with a sign that read "Hell, you've made it this far. Suck it up and finish!" We must have said that to each other 20 times after we saw that sign. It ran through my head like a broken record. But the sign pictured below stuck with me throughout the race and will stick with me for the rest of my life. For those of you who have ever done anything like a half marathon, a triathlon or whatever the big event, you know that the nerves leading up to the race are unfathomable. The adrenaline that kicks in and lasts 13 miles and then some is unbelievable. I felt God that day. I felt God many times. I was not in top shape to do this. I did not finish my training in the way that I should have. But, I am a strong, determined woman and I do and will always "let my heart race." I will teach my girls that we are strong and can do anything we put our minds to as long as we are not afraid to let our hearts race. It really struck me and as cheesy as it sounds, it changed my perspective. God was with me and it was amazing.

We are headed to the Fitness Expo to pick up our race packets. The nerves are definitely in full gear at this point.

This is at 4:45 in the morning as we are being dropped off by our cheerleaders, D and K, so that we don't have to walk any farther than the planned 13 miles. Haha!
We bought matching outfits. Aren't we cute?
Ready as we will ever be...
This picture is somewhere between mile 1 and 2. We were going strong and feeling pretty good.
K and D- our cheerleaders! We were able to see them 3 times along the race and it truly is unbelievable how inspiring it is to see friends and loved ones during this kind of grueling event. It is so emotional. I kept thinking about Daren and the girls wanting them to be proud of me, and it pushed me to finish.
This was very emotional for Catherine and me. We held hands coming down the finish line and we cried. It was amazing! We did it and we did it together!
Coming down the final stretch
Sister hugs at the finish line
Mom and Dad didn't make it out to San Diego for our special moment, but they greeted me at the airport with a sign and took Daren and I to dinner. It was really neat! As I was coming down the escalator, people started cheering and I looked up and realized they were cheering for me. Very proud moment for me. I don't know if I will ever do this marathon thing again, but if I do, I will be damn sure that I am in tip top shape to do it. Ha! Ha!

Good Ship Lollipop recital

Before the show with Mommy and Daddy
Back stage with her teacher, Miss Sarah, who is wonderful. Claire adores her.
Claire had her first dance recital this year! She should be on her second, but on the real first one (last year), she got the flu. Needless to say, we were all very excited to see Claire's rendition of the "Good Ship Lollipop." We did get a sneak preview at the Hill Country Galleria festival where she and a few friends danced, but the real recital was at the Austin Waldorf School with a packed house and a large crowd to support sweet Claire. She did great! There are 11 girls in her class and only 3 showed up for the big recital day?! We were really surprised by that, but the recital was held on Memorial Day weekend so let's hope the others were having fun on the lake. Dance has been fun for Claire. She LOVES to dance. She loves the stage and she loves to perform.
The dance studio had professional photographers there. Admittedly, this is a little much for a gaggle of 4 year olds but they are cute pictures.
Coming on stage

And, here's Claire's debut of the "Good Ship Lollipop"

This is post-show and we couldn't rip Claire off the stage.

Claire's crowd... (My parents were there in spirit. They attended a funeral for a very dear friend that day.)

Happy Birthday to D!

Happy 34th Birthday, Daren! What a HOT 34 he is! It is really strange to think that we have known each other since we were 19. We have celebrated 15 birthdays together...THAT'S CRAZY! I love Daren more and more with each new year. He is an amazing father, a wonderful husband, a great friend and a smart businessman. Here's to many more birthday celebrations!

Our family on D's birthday
The girls had a slumber party with Grandma and Pops so we could have a birthday date night. We had a drink on the deck at Perla's and then had a delicious meal at Botticelli's.

The Nixes came in town to celebrate D's birthday.
We grilled at Grandma and Pops to celebrate D's birthday with my family. It was tough to get Harper girl out of the water! She's a fish!
